To achieve a resolution that you are satisfied with, you need to prepare thoughtfully and carefully for mediation. Here are Michigan Behavioral Health Mediation Services’ top three tips to ensure that you are ready.

1. Do your homework. Make sure you have all of your information gathered that pertains to your case. Spend time thinking through your approach. Consider how you will present your position. What is the heart of the matter for you? What would you like to talk about? What would a fair resolution look like to you? It’s better to explain your position in detail so that all parties involved understand your side. Do your homework ahead of time so that you are better equipped to participate in mediation.

2. Confirm participants. Confirm the appropriate people who need to be involved. During the intake process, which is one of the first steps in the mediation process, you and the mediator will talk about who needs to be at the table. Communicate to your mediator anyone who you think needs to participate. Your mediator will help you review your list to confirm the right parties are involved. You want to make sure that those parties are present and fully informed in order to resolve the dispute. Be open to talking face to face. Remember, mediation is a team effort, not a spectator sport.

3. Designate your time. This is your chance to have your dispute resolved. Set aside the appropriate amount of time to dedicate yourself completely to the mediation process. While you are preparing for mediation and doing your homework, create an environment that is free of distractions so that you can concentrate. When you are in mediation, be fully present knowing that your time is being well spent.

By following these tips, you will be ready and feel more confident when you sit down at the table. Being prepared will help you during every step of your mediation.
